Lightning News Broadcase

MIDS

The MAP INFO DISPLAY SYSTEM (MIDS) is a Windows application program designed specifically for the display and manipulation of lightning data from the GPATS lightning network. The display consists of a number of windows, and the program is controlled and operated from the main window, which contains the menu and control buttons. This control window is the program, along with one map display window. All other windows can be switched on or off as the user desires. Closing the control bar window will terminate the MIDS program. All windows can be re-sized or iconised as the user desires in typical Windows fashion. All windows contain standard buttons associated with any other Windows application program for closing, iconising, or making the window full screen.

The program uses all of the Windows controls, such as file management, color palettes and printer controls. This program is designed to be in a multi-tasking role and, as such, can be connected and operated in the background while other Windows application programs are operating.

This data is displayed on a map of Australia, as shown in figure below:

As you can see from the view:

  • There are Display #1, Cyclic Graph and Incoming Data Windows.
  • The Display #1 window shows Lightning occurring across Australia.
  • The user can magnify down on a specific area to pin point the Lightning occurring in their area.
  • They can get all the relevant details of a specific Lightning strike by selecting it.
  • The information displayed, for the selected strike, contains date, time - in UTC - and magnitude.
  • It also specifies whether the strike is a cloud to ground positive, cloud to ground negative or cloud to cloud.
  • The Cyclic Graph window shows the intensity of a Lightning Storm that is occurring at that moment.
  • This shows, by graph bars, whether the storm is intensifying or diminishing.
  • The Incoming Data window shows the information of each strike that is occurring across Australia.
  • It shows Date, Time (UTC), Latitude, Longitude, Type of strike and the amperage (in KA - kilo amperes) value of the strike.
  • 3000 point alarm regions allowing many complex alarm regions to be set up
  • Email alert capability on alarm region stroke
  • Alarm strokes saved to alarm stroke archive file
  • Zoom to last 10 alarm strokes hotspot facility
  • Colour-coded incoming data display and alarm stroke identification in incoming data window
  • Ability to export and save archived data files to formats such as HTML, CSV and text
  • Improved lightning storm movie playback functions
  • A new feature in MIDS4 is the ability to display real-time or archived lightning data within a Google Earth environment with the click of a button!

Whilst all this is happening, the system saves all this information to file, so the user can at anytime bring up the information stored for lightning occurring on a particular date.
